1. Los Comales - it's where the locals eat, on 7th Street on the East side of town. We'd link to their website but they don't have one!
2. Franklin BBQ - a must do in Austin, but go early! They close when they run out, and that's usually around 11:30am!! There will be line!
3. County Line BBQ - the BBQ is heavenly, and don't miss out on the freshly baked bread!
4. Amy's Ice Cream - a little funky, a little fabulous, pure Austin!

My Favorite Austin Eats

The Texas Style Council is just a few weeks away and I'm hoping that someone will help me decide what to pack in exchange for some delicious restaurant recommendations. With that in mind, here are my favorite Austin Eats!

1. Chips and Queso at Torchy's Tacos!

2. There is delicious BBQ everywhere you look in Texas but the Salt Lick is famous for a reason. I say, if it's good enough for Top Chef (and Man vs. Food and Food Network) it's good enough for me!

3. Hyde Park Bar and Grill - I've never had a bad meal there and their french fries have been named the "Best of Austin". My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

4. The food trailers that you see all around town but especially the original Hey Cupcake trailer.

The perfect spot for an afternoon snack!

Confession: While I might not have found all 20 of the Valentine cards Mom hid around my house over the weekend, I found my Valentine present about 5 minutes after she and Dad pulled out of the driveway. (Note to Mom: the open shelves by the bathtub aren't a good hiding spot.) But, being the good child that I am, I didn't open it until this morning. {Plus, there was one year when I "found" a present a few weeks before Christmas and I felt guilty the entire time. Since then, you find it, you leave it wrapped. Period.} So, imagine my glee when my present was an adorable poem and a J. Crew gift card!

So, in honor of Valentine's Day (and J. Crew giftcards) take a look at the things I'm lusting after!

Inspired by Becky's great idea for treats for her office, I decided to follow suit. Spoiler Alert: If you work with me, stop reading!!

Because I work with a little larger group than Becky, I needed two different sets of treats ... 30 for one group and then 6 for the leadership team. Note: A quick trip to the local "big box" store provided all the supplies for this project, so this project scores big points for convenience!

Here's what I did:

For the 30, freshly popped popcorn mixed with M&M's candies in a cellophane bag, tied with a cute red ribbon. Super simple, economical, quick to produce, and darling when you pile a bunch of these in a basket, right?

Then, for the 6, I purchased a dozen half-pint Mason jars (save the extras for another time), added a tiny little brownie from Mary Louise Butter's (Isn't that a great name for a brownie bakery?!) and a small gift card, topped the jar lids with a piece of red fabric, and stacked the jars up, ready to go. Again, super simple, quick to produce, and the perfect thing for someone you want to give a little nicer treat to on February 14th. Wouldn't your child's teacher like a little gift card to his/her favorite place instead of another box of candy?? You'll get rave reviews, I promise!!

3 Cheers for Madeleine!

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner (next Tuesday, to be exact) and I thought it might be fun to share the treats I’m giving the folks that I spend most of my life with … the people I work with. Spoiler Alert: If you work with me, quit reading now!

A little back story. I work in a small office (10 people) and have a boss named Madeleine. Vague? Yes. Enough information for what’s about to come? Absolutely.

Imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon individually wrapped boxes of Madeleines (Get it – Madeleine...the cookie? Madeleine...my boss!) at the grocery store (Tom Thumb or Randalls depending on where you live) for less than $1.50 each. And, since the packaging was pink, I knew it was the perfect treat. So, I loaded up my cart with packages and off to the checkout line I went. All that was left was to tie on a homemade tag (I used these in blossom and these in white from Paper Source and my favorite new font) with some pink and white striped Bakers Twine (purchased here a zillion years ago). My total cost for this little project? Less than $20.00! Total time spent turning a grocery store find into a super cute treat? 10 minutes. Happy Valentine’s Day to me!

The Pink Swap

A few weeks ago we were lucky enough to be chosen to participate in the Pink Swap, held by Hopsy at Monograms and Manicures. The rules were simple. We were matched with Cindy from Sweet Tea Belle and we were given the task of swapping a box of Pink goodies. The only rules, you had to give the other person 4 items, and the limit was $30.00. With the rules in hand, and an eye for pink, we set out to go shopping. Since Cindy received her box on Friday afternoon, we get to share what we sent!

We sent Cindy a pink pashmina, cute polka dot napkins, pink icing, pink nail polish, pink kool-aid, pink candy, pink sprinkles, pink pens, pink cards, and a pink polka dot emery board. Her box was overflowing with PINK!

But, since we're nice girls, one box of pink didn't seem like enough. Which is why we made a box for a lucky reader! Here are the rules.

Are You Ready for Some ... Shut Your Mouth!

Unless you ~~live under a rock~~ don't have a TV, chances are you know what's happening this Sunday ... the newest episode of Downton Abbey! Wait... that's not right, it is?! Nope. This Sunday is when America shows off our very best - football, and commercials. It's time for the Super Bowl!

And, since no Super Bowl party (whether for 1 or 100) is complete without the perfect snacks, allow us to take this time to share with you what we lovingly refer to as "Shut Your Mouth Spicy Pecans"! Why "Shut Your Mouth?", you ask. Because, these things are so spicy that they will set your mouth on fire, and maybe clear out your sinuses too. Taken from this recipe by Martha Stewart, they're the perfect addition to any football game, provided there's beer to keep you from breathing fire!

Here's what Martha says you need:
1 tablespoon sea salt
2 tablespoons of cayenne pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons of paprika
1/2 cup sugar
2 large egg whites
5 cups of pecans

Here's what we say: Add a pinch of brown sugar, if you have it, and cut back a bit on the cayenne. Now, if you like things super hot nearly unmanigably spicy, go full force with the cayenne. We cut back and they'll still make your nose run!

First, preheat your oven to 300 degrees and line a cookie sheet (or two, depending on how big they are) with parchment paper. Combine all of your dry ingredients in a bowl. In a separate bowl or, using your mixer, whip your egg whites until they are foamy and then add your dry ingredients. Stir in your pecans until they're covered and spread them, as a single layer, onto your cookie sheets. Stick them in the oven for 15 minutes at 300 degrees and then reduce your temperature to 250 and cook for 10 more minutes. As soon as they come out of the oven, spread the hot pecans on a fresh sheet of parchment (or wax paper) to cool. Be sure to spread as a single layer so you don't get a gob of pecans. Then, let them cool.

If you made these today, they would still be good on Sunday (assuming they last that long, and that you put them in a baggie or other airtight container.

My Latest Guilty Pleasure

Confession: I blame my Dad. You see, a couple of weeks ago, when I was staying with them, I was introduced to my latest Guilty Pleasure: the TV Show “Gold Rush” on the Discovery Channel, a reality series that follows gold miners in Alaska. Why do I blame him, you ask? Well, I blame my Dad for not allowing me to play “couch commando” at 9pm. “We don’t watch Fashion Police,” he said. So there I was, captive to his television demands, an unwilling viewer of “Gold Rush“. That is, until the hour was over. By then, I was hooked. Since then, my DVR has been set, and every Friday, whether I’m home or not, “Gold Rush” is my guilty pleasure of choice. (Bet you thought this was going to be about The Bachelor, didn‘t you?)

This weekend, while perusing an antiques shop in a little, out of the way Texas town, I stumbled upon the cutest drinking glass that I just had to take home. Now why would I buy one glass, let alone one circa 1950 and all about the Gold Rush in Alaska?? Not to drink out of but rather for some flowers, for my desk, to give me a laugh, and, on Friday afternoon, to remind me that “Gold Rush” is on … I better get home!

P.S. Since turnabout is fair play, I spent Sunday evening making sure my Dad was officially hooked on Downton Abbey!

Side by Side: The New Neutral

Last weekend we were lucky enough to spend 3 days in the same town! This meant eating, cooking, chatting and ... shopping! We both scored some FAB purchases at Target and each walked away with a little something gray. Have you heard? It's the new "neutral"!!!

Becky walked away with a pair of Foo Dogs for a whopping $9.99! That's right. Foo Dog bookends/accessories/fabulousness for less than $10.00! (See them Here)

Jenny walked away with some adorable ballet flats with jeweled toes. Super cute with jeans and equally dressy with black pants. (Get yours Here)

The moral of this story? It's dangerous when we go shopping together. There are some FAB gray finds if you know where to look, and a lot of our money is now living at Target. (No, they didn't pay us to say that, but we wish they would!!)

Spread the Love!

Ever wonder why we teach our kids to send/make Valentines for their classmates/friends, and then, as adults, we don't send notes of appreciation and friendship to our friends? Seems silly, right? Here's one solution:

This past Christmas was crazy, as my new job found me working more than I have ever worked during the holidays. Now, first I must say: Don't worry. This wasn't a bad thing! In fact, I love my job... a lot! It just messed with my "send a Christmas card" plan this year. So, by way of both an apology to our fabulous friends and out of town family who sent us cards, and because we really truly think of them often and love them a lot, we've decided to send out Valentine's Day cards this year!

Simple white cards, scrolly black text, our names hand signed in bright red ink, and bright red envelopes will be on the way to our friends and out of town family in just a few short weeks.

Here's hoping they feel loved (and are a little surprised) when a Valentine shows up in their mailbox this year! And who knows... maybe it will start a new trend. It's really not hard to do. They sell Valentines in the store. Why not do your part to keep the economy strong and the Post Office alive? Send a Valentine... or two... or twenty! I bet your friends will smile when they find your card in their mailbox on February 14th!

Weekend Review ... and then we ate something!

1. Birthday Weekend means one thing ... cake! Or, in this case, cupcakes! And super cute napkins!
2. Breakfast Saturday morning. Mr. Wonderful tried migas for the first time.
3. No car trip between Dallas and Austin can be complete without a stop for kolaches in West.
4. When it's 70 degrees in January you can't miss an opportunity to eat dinner outside. BBQ Chicken, fresh corn on the cob and broccoli ... yum!
So, it's clear that our weekend was all about food (though it didn't seem so at the time). Whatever you did this weekend, we hope it was happy!

An Ode to Adler

Who doesn't love Jonathan Adler, the "iconic potter" judge on Bravo's Top Design? His designs are quirky, adorable, and add the perfect pop to any room. (Don't know Adler? Check out his website.) I LOVE Adler. But, until the Publisher's Clearing House stops by with a truck of money, his lamps are a little out of my price range. So, as an ode to Adler, and with a little help from a friend (that's right, you can still do this even if you aren't tool savvy) I set out to transform a ceramic orange head sculpture into an Adler-esque lamp.

Here's what you need to do the same:

A piece of ceramic that you like and are willing to turn into a lamp ... forever (there is no un-doing after you've started this project)
A lamp kit (less than $10.00 and found at your local hardware store)
Paint (if you don't like the color of your ceramic piece)
The ability to drill a hole into the top of the ceramic (you can either use a hand drill or spend a little time and patience using a file)
A lamp shade

Here's what you do:
First, you're going to need to drill a hole into the top of your ceramic, where you want the lightbulb to live. It's important to be very careful during this step as you could easily wind up with a pile of ceramic instead of the first part of a lamp. I recommend taping off the area around where you're drilling to keep the ceramic from cracking. So, by yourself if you're so inclined, or with the help of a tool savvy friend (Thanks Glenn!) drill a hole big enough to fit the rod in your lamp kit.

Once you've got the hole drilled, it's time to install the lamp kit. Using the directions in the package install the kit. Seriously. It's that easy. When you're done, add a bulb to the lamp and plug it in. It would be a shame to get all the way to the last step to find out that you didn't wire the lamp correctly. Test it. You'll be glad you did!

If your new lamp isn't the color you want, take it outside and spray paint it. If you're going for an Adler-esque look like I was, there's nothing better than a little white spray paint. It will really change the look of your lamp. Don't forget to tape off the metal on the lamp kit - you don't want to paint this part!

Add a lamp shade and voila! An adorable new lamp courtesy of you. So, the next time you see a piece of ceramic in a fun shape, consider the possibilities. Who says the only way you can have a designer lamp is by buying it from a designer? Be your own designer!

Introducing Mr. Wonderful

I love setting the table for breakfast the night before, and I love it to look cheery for Mr. Wonderful while he reads the paper and does the New York Times crossword puzzle each morning. (Makes us sound old, right?!)

When setting the table one night a few weeks ago, I realized that my “favorite of all time” bowls were starting to look a little worn. Great ceramic bowls from Anthropologie that they, sadly, do not carry in yellow any more. While I love them, they chip really easily, and our once hearty collection has dwindled down to 1.

As I lamented this fact, I told Mr. Wonderful that we needed some new bowls. At the time I thought he was just being polite when he said “Go for it.”

Later that weekend, while shopping at our local Hispanic grocery store (if you have one in your area, do yourself a favor and go check out their super duper produce section), Mr. Wonderful wanders off, and then returns moments later with a big stack of… yellow bowls! Plastic this time instead of ceramic, in a cheery bright yellow. Best of all, they were only $1 each! Now, these great bowls are my new “favorite of all time”!!

Lessons learned here:

1. Mr. Wonderful really is wonderful. (I already knew that!)

2. Get creative in your shopping. You never know when you will find your next treasure!!

Spring is Getting Ready to ... Sprung?

More Veggies in 2012

After a trip to my car where I discovered this mess in the floor of the back seat, I realized that I need to get a healthier eating plan, and fast! I could almost feel my arteries begin to clog as I cleaned out the car!! When I got finished, I went inside and promptly subscribed to a local, organic produce delivery service.

Now I know that sounds like a frivilous (and lazy) way to get fresh vegetables, but with my crazy work schedule, it made sense. The cost: $20.00 for the fruits and vegetables in each of the photos below. Where I live, that's just about the same price you would pay at the grocery store. And they deliver it ... to my house ... while I'm at work!

Now when I get off work, there's no temptation to do the "drive thru" thing because I know that there is a pile of fresh stuff waiting at home. And it's leading to some creative cooking. When I ponder what to do with the bok choy or some other unusual item, my husband always says "Can't you just saute it with some butter?" I gotta' hand it to him there. Butter always makes things taste better. And studies say that's better than "drive thru" any day!

Here's to good health, fresh veggies, and ... ok, I'll admit it ... the occasional drive thru. After all, I'm not perfect.

Bidding 2011 a Fond Adieu

There are ~~two~~ three types of people as the year comes to an end. First, there are the people that look back at the year and think of all of the bad (the resolutions broken, bad days, and sadness). Then, there are the people that look back on the year and think of all of the good (the things that were accomplished, the joy, the fun). And then there are the people that could care less that the year is over and another one is about to begin. I belong to the second camp. So, with that in mind, allow me to indulge in a bit of the fabulousness that was 2011:

I won big-ish ($29.16) in Vegas! {Note: This $29.16 was won with a $0.05 voucher I found left in a machine so, it really was a big win for a cheap gambler like me!}

I got to cross a BIG thing off of my Bucket List when I took my Dad to Game 3 of the World Series. The Rangers didn't win but WE WERE THERE!

I went to the craziest concert EVER with my BFF! NKOTBSB (New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys, for those of you not down with the lingo). It was NUTS! And a lot of fun!

A fabulous beach vacation with the fam!

Oh yeah ... I started a blog with my Mom too!

Side by Side: A Food Review

A couple of notes before we get started. First, no one paid us to do this review, and we didn't get this for free. We whipped out our wallets (or, technically Jenny whipped out her wallet) and paid with our hard earned money - just like you'll do if you decide to try this. Second, you should know that our palates are very different. Becky is a picky eater and doesn't like to try new/different things. Jenny knows good food and isn't afraid to experiment.

So, with that in mind, here's our review of the Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers Rotini and Zesty Marinara Sauce (only 290 calories)!

Jenny Says: It was easy. It was good. It was the perfect thing to stash in my desk drawer for an "emergency" lunch. Jazzing it up with a little fresh Parmesan would have been even better! Definitely will buy again!

Becky Says: A delicious lunch that I can stash in my desk, cook in the microwave in less than 5 minutes, and doesn't erase my morning workout with a ton of calories? I'm in! Did I mention that it was tasty? It was. But you totally need some Parmesan - what's pasta without Parmesan???

18 Year Old Boys Are Easy To Shop For

Every Thanksgiving, while we're still sitting around the table with Mom's family, we draw names for Christmas. Everyone 18 or older on Christmas is allowed to play and, after the names have been drawn, we go around the table with each person getting a chance to say what they want for Christmas. This year, I drew my cousin Chase (don't worry, he's not reading this - he's an 18 year old boy)! So, when it was his turn to say what he wanted the conversation went something like this:

Grandmother: Chase, your turn, what do you want?

Chase: What's the dollar limit?

Grandmother: $25.00

Chase: Then I'd like $25.00

Me (to myself): SCORE!

Then the question became, what's a fun way to wrap cash for an 18 year old - or anyone for that matter? {Note: Yes, I know that there are super cool game cube things that you can put money in but there is a rule in our family that your gift wrap cannot exceed $5.00. We have a lot of rules to make sure everyone fights fair (we will ask for receipts if your gift looks out of line with the dollar limit). This gift wrap cost me exactly $4.32} Here's what I came up with:

Nesting boxes!

I started out with 3 different sized boxes that I picked up at the Container Store (love that place), some play money from the party store, and the real gift ... cash!

Start with the smallest box and put in some real money and some play money. Then, wrap it like you would a normal present. Put it in the next size box and fill around with a mixture of real and play money.

Then, wrap that box and place it in the next larger box. You could do this as many times as you want - but I used 3 boxes.

Be sure that you cover the entire package inside the box with the cash mixture.

Then, wrap the box and, if you only used 3 boxes to begin with, you're finished. If you're going with more boxes and more boxes, just continue stacking and wrapping until you get to the outside. Then, voila, you're finished. And, even though your 18 year old cousin is just getting $25.00 cash (per his request) he has more than just an envelope to open ... he has 3 presents! And, if you've ever met him you'd know that he'll think this is pretty cool.

P.S. Sometimes you buy a box that is too big for your wrapping paper and your ends don't meet. What to do when that happens? Don't start over - it's Christmas - do you really have time? Take a little of your leftover wrapping paper and cut a heart (or star, or shape of your choice) to put over the ends. It'll look like you did it on purpose!

The Perfect Tulle Bow

When I walked into my office one morning this week I found 7 presents on my desk waiting to be wrapped. You see, I'm kind of the un-official present wrapper of our office. And, since everyone asks for big tulle bows on their packages, I figured this would be the perfect time for a tulle bow tutorial. It's not expensive, it's not complicated, and it instantly adds a cuteness factor to your gifts ... what's not to like?

Let's get started:

Step 1: Start out with a wrapped package and a roll of tulle in a color that goes with your wrapping paper. I'm going to assume that you're set on the how to wrap a package part but, if you didn't learn to wrap a package from a Dad that makes hospital corners on his presents, or a Mom that can Martha Stewart anything into cuteness oblivion, let me know and I'll write a tutorial on that too. Now, about the tulle ... You can find tulle at your local craft stores or you can buy it online in a variety of colors - I keep a stock of about 10 colors in my crafting closet so I'm ready to wrap at a moments notice. Note: You want to buy the tulle that's at least 6" wide - it's just cuter.

Step 2: Cut a piece of tulle long enough to wrap around the package and tie in the front. You want to leave your ends a little long so be sure to cut more than you think you'll need.

Step 3: Cut another piece of tulle like you did in Step 2 and tie around the package like in Step 2 but this time wrap the tulle around the other side of the package. (If you tied your tulle from side to side in step 2, tie it from top to bottom in step 3, or vice versa.) Now you should 4 ends on the top of your package.

Step 4: Cut yourself a loooong piece of tulle. This is what we're going to use to make the bow so be generous. Eyeball about how big you're going to want your bow to be (in relation to the top of your package) and go back and forth with the tulle in your hand until you have a nice pile of tulle as shown above. Don't let go or you'll have to do this step over.

Step 5: Remember those lose ends from steps 2 and 3? Plop your chunk o' tulle from step 4 in the middle of these ends and tie them around the chunk, attaching the bow to the package. You'll have to be little dexterous here as you don't want to let go of the big chunk o' tulle until it's attached to the package. Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Step 6: Fluff your tulle chunk to turn it into a bow. This is pretty easy and probably doesn't require explanation but, if you're feeling uncertain, just separate your tulle which is probably a little matted down from being tied to your package. Snip the ends that we left in steps 2 and 3 to the size of the bow so they're not hanging over the edges of your present.

And that's it - you have a super cute tulle bow that took your plain package to the next level. (I bet you wouldn't guess that this package was wrapped with paper from the $1 section at Target!)

So this Christmas, when you're trying to figure out what to do to make your present stand out, try adding a tulle bow. It's super easy, super cheap, and super cute ... I don't know anything better than that!

What do you do when wearing a yellow shirt makes you look ruddy (like Jenny) or jaundice (like Becky)? You could either be sad that yellow isn't a cute color for you or you could do what we did and put on some Mustard Colored Accessories! It's like regular yellow only better!

On Monday, Jenny was in town for 18 hours and we both got out of our cars rocking Mustard Accessories (a scarf for Jenny and gloves for Becky*). {Side note: We didn't coordinate - we just both got dressed and put on Mustard cuteness (and we didn't get dressed in the same place)!}

*Shopping Tip: Jenny's scarf came from Target. Becky's gloves came from Attagirl by Kedrin.

{Funny but true ... we live 200 miles apart and both got the same scarf at Target!}

So, when your color of the moment isn't your best color, add a pop in your accessories!

The Weekend Review: At Least it Looked Cute!

Crazy for ... Paper!

I love cards, note cards, wrapping paper... you name it! If it's paper, I'm hooked.

Here is a picture of my current stash of holiday cards, stickers, return address labels, gift tags and the like. The basket sits on the kitchen table all through the holidays so that, when inspiration strikes, I will be ready!! Even in the midst of the rush of December, it is fun to find "just the right card" To send to a friend to make going to the mailbox a little for fun for him/her! After all, don't we all like the sight of a hand addressed card from a friend in the mailbox?

Now with all the red and green, I'm sure you are wondering about the plain blue paper in the basket. What's that about, you ask? Well, as you may know, blue is the color of Advent, the 4 week period that precedes Christmas. Since we are in Advent now, keeping a couple of pieces of blue paper in the basket helps me remember what all the celebration is really supposed to be about. Really important, right?!

In fact, why not tie a couple of pieces of blue ribbon on your Christmas tree this year, just as a reminder? And check out the wreath on my office door. The blue ribbon is... you guessed it... paper!

Thank You Notes Can Be Fun!

My mother is a stickler for Thank You notes. Someone gives you something, write a note. Someone does something nice for you, write a note. On more than one occasion I was told, "If they thought enough of you to take their time to do something nice for you, you can take a few minutes of your time to write them a note.".

In our house, the rule was, you can't use the present until you write the note. This is a VERY hard rule when you're 7 but it makes for an adult that mails notes in a timely fashion. You were right Mom. It is a good habit!

But one of the other rules in our house was that the Thank You notes could be fun - or silly - or creative - as long as they said Thanks! Case in point - the note I received after Mom spent the night while in town a few weeks ago. Short, sweet, and silly!

So, at this point you're probably thinking "blah blah blah, write a thank you note" but a tip is coming your way in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... at stationery/invitation/paper stores there's always a section in the back of the store with sale items. If you're like us, and love all things paper, you've probably perused this section before thinking, "if only I needed 5 sheets with a trampoline on them for $0.10 each..." and here's where the Thank You notes can get really fun. What about using a trampoline card as a thank you note? "I Jump for Joy every time I think of using the new blender!". Or, like Mom, why note use a slumber party card to thank someone for letting you stay at their house?! So, the next time you're trying to find something to do with those super cute cards that are on sale at the store, think about thank you notes. After all, you're fabulous, your Thank You notes should be too!

Something Yummy ... Bavaro's Pasta Sauce

A few months ago I received an email from Open Sky (if you haven't joined, click here and join now!) saying I had a credit for $10.00 that was about to expire. Not one to let free money slip away, I did a little online shopping and found a great deal on Bavaro's Pasta Sauce. 3 jars for $10.00 which means I only paid shipping! Score one for the bargain shoppers. So, on a rainy Sunday night, I decided to test out my new find and I was not disappointed!

Here's what you need to know before you buy a jar. First, at $7.99 from their website, it's not cheap. In fact, had I not seen the Open Sky, I doubt I would have tried it - they don't carry it at my store. Second, it's not a chunky sauce. If you like big pieces of tomato and peppers in your sauce, this isn't the sauce for you. But, if you're like me, and can make one jar of sauce last for 2 meals (just keep it in the fridge), and like to mix your fresh pasta in the sauce, Italian Style, it's pretty delicious! In fact, I'm looking forward to trying my other jars.

The Art of the Swag Bag

In my years of work travel, I've been lucky enough to find treats in my room upon check-in on multiple occasions (because of my job, the hotels want to make sure that I have a nice experience). This has led to a family tradition we call the "swag bag". Why "swag bag", you ask? Because the first thing that Dad always asks when I call from a trip is ... "What kind of swag did you get?" (I think he's been watching a little too much E! with Mom!) So, we've started leaving "swag" when one of us is coming for a visit. Swag can be, and has been, anything from a magazine and candy bar to a vuvuzela (you know, those annoying horn things) during the World Cup. Anything fun, and usually funny.

I visited Mom and Dad a few weeks ago and walked away with this FAB "swag bag"!

In the bag ... a stack of magazines, a new keychain (orange ostrich in the shape of an ostrich), a Lilly Pulitzer book that Mom stole from my house, and a Kate Spade tote with a glitter bottom. I guess this means I'll have to step it up a notch the next time Mom comes for a visit!
